We have had a course at Indian Lake for many years called Senior Prep.
Half of the year is dedicated to Financial Literacy and the other half is
for college and career exploration and preparation.  That component
includes career speakers and some job shadowing.

Over the course of the year, students have to get a minimum of 24 hours of
"on campus" service.  Each Friday they assist in an elementary or middle
school classroom during their actual class meeting time.  They also have to
get a minimum of 6 verified community service (outside of school) hours
during the year.  This is the part that we had to scale back recently
because it has been so difficult to get students to complete well-planned
and meaningful community service experiences.  During the last week of
school, these seniors also break out into several groups to put in a 6 hour
work day at the state park, in the local villages or townships, and one
group stays on campus to complete painting, landscaping, and general
maintenance tasks.

It's not perfect, but the course has worked very well for us, but we are
always continuing to tweak it.  We recently hand-picked some of the senior
prep students to provide Meals on Wheels and to work at the local food
pantry in lieu of doing the on campus service.
