FBI Warns of Scammers Impersonating Government Officials Targeting US Citizens <https://athena.api.deloittefusion.net/threat_advisories/view/7565>

Issue Date: Mar 8, 2022 | TLP: Green1 | Serial: G-TN-EN-01-19888 | Industry: All | Region: North America
________________________________

On March 07, 2022, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released an advisory warning of scammers impersonating law enforcement or government officials in their ongoing fraud schemes targeting US citizens. The scammers focus on extorting money or stealing the personally identifiable information of US citizens.

According to the report, the scammers used bogus credentials and spoofed exact phone numbers belonging to the US government and law enforcement agencies to gain victims' trust. The scammers create urgency, use an aggressive tone in the campaign, and instruct victims to refrain from sharing the incident with anyone, including friends and families. The victims are also threatened with arrest and imprisonment for several fake reasons, and asked to provide their sensitive information because a data breach supposedly affected them, or their documents expired and needed renewal. In some cases, the scammers threaten the victims with bogus legal consequences and ask for money via prepaid cards, overseas wire transfers, or cash by mail or cryptocurrency.

The FBI quoted the incident and mentioned that the authorities never communicate by phone to demand money or sensitive information. The FBI also said the authorities always reach out to anyone in person or by official letters mentioning the legal actions. The FBI urged citizens to ask for the identity card of the officials to validate before complying with their request.
