Thank you to all that responded to my email regarding allowing dock time! I
know we all have language regarding different types of leaves in our
contracts. I was trying to find out what other districts do when they get a
request for a dock day because an employee is out of personal leave and
wants to take an uppaid vacation day. I received 26 replies and here are
the results:

-- 4 Districts allow dock time with Superintendent approval.

-- 7 Districts have either a policy or procedure and allow dock time with
Board approval.

--3 Districts have negotiated language specific to dock time that state
such things as timelines, number of days allowed and that it is the
Superintendent's sole discretion, and the amount to be dock includes
insurance benefits.

--12 Districts stated they do not allow any dock time for vacations. They
only allow dock time for leaves listed by the Ohio Revised Code or FMLA. My
understanding is that the ORC limits unpaid leave for requested leaves of
absence, medical, educational, involuntary and administrative leaves. Some
of these district did say they do have exceptions for new hires or
extremely unique situations. Another District that does not permit dock
time has negotiated language that allows 2 personal days to carry over
which would potentially give an employee 5 personal days every other year
so they can take a vacation during a school year.

I really appreciated all the responses! Thanks so much!

Sincerely,
