[Tech-l] Google Captcha

All,

Many of you are experiencing the infamous Google captcha check. This has been an off and on irritant for a few years now, but as of this past Christmas Google has upped the cost of using Google search. In researching what other ITCs and ISPs have done to mitigate this annoyance one of the primary answers was eliminate pings to Google 8.8.8.8. We have allowed this in the past because Meraki devices needed it to determine if they had internet access. While they still do these pings they do not rely on their success anymore. Therefore, later tonight we are going to block all pings to 8.8.8.8.

Should you find you still need to ping 8.8.8.8 for something else, please provide the IP address(es) or subnet that specifically needs to do this and the reason for the need. We will provide a new public NAT. For those of you with your own firewall this is not an option since you only have one IP address we see and therefore only have one NAT.

One further thing we can offer is to change your primary NAT (or PAT in some cases). This will take some coordination because you will need to notify your content filtering provider of such changes, in some cases you may need to make DNS changes, and we may need to notify InfOhio. We will process these requests on a first come, first serve basis.

Finally, we are going to begin investigating each District's traffic to see if they do have some sort of Bot type traffic.

If we find other alternatives we will let you know.
