Good morning
Yesterday in the Grad training the question was asked about a student taking a course that could be advanced SCI for some students and regular SCI for others in the same class.
Here is an ODE ticket that addresses a similar situation
EMIS Subject Area for Credit vs. CORE Subject Area
Description
Good morning,
The EMIS Coordinator at Indian Lake Local (048082) is needing further explanation of the question from the 9/18/2023 ODE ITC Call Notes. It is the next to the last question in the Q&A section. The question was: 'Regarding Electives, Subject Area, CORE Area - we are trying to get information out to districts on the difference between these. The GC record (Subject Area) and CORE Area are coming from different areas, but districts are having a hard time figuring out if the Subject Area and CORE Area are always the same (match each other)?
The specific questions from Indian Lake are:
1.) "I am not sure I have ever seen a course coded where the EMIS Subject Area for Credit and the CORE Subject Area are different. Do these two fields always match? Do they have to be the same?"
2.) "Which field is ODE looking at when determining where a course is counting toward graduation credit? The EMIS Subject Area for Credit or the CORE Subject Area?"
I would greatly appreciate your assistance with this Coordinator's questions, as I do not feel 100% confident in answering these questions. Thank you for your time and expertise!

Final Case Comments
Hi, Emily,
1.) "I am not sure I have ever seen a course coded where the EMIS Subject Area for Credit and the CORE Subject Area are different. Do these two fields always match? Do they have to be the same?"
The Subject Area for Credit on the Course Master Record and the Core Area on the Graduation--Core Summary Record are often the same. They do not, however, have to be. And indeed they aren't always. There are cases where students are getting credit in multiple areas for one course. For example, students could be taking a 1 credit course for which they awarded 1/2 credit in Financial Literacy and 1/2 credit in Business. Or it could be that some students in a course are getting credit for an advanced science course and other students in the same class already have their advanced credits so are getting "regular" science credit instead. In such cases, what is on the Course Master for Subject Area for Credit will differ from what is on the Graduation--Core Summary Record for Core Area.
2.) "Which field is ODE looking at when determining where a course is counting toward graduation credit? The EMIS Subject Area for Credit or the CORE Subject Area?"
We're looking at the credits the student has earned. So we're looking at the Core Area on the Graduation--Core Summary Record.
That said, I listened to the Grad Points Training that DASL state had yesterday and this is what they said.
If you want to count the credits as Life Science for some students and Advanced for others you will need to create 2 separate courses for that. DASL cannot accommodate having it count one way for some and another way for others in the same course.
They also indicated that Grad Points looks at the EMIS subject area for credit.

Still looking into some of the other questions. I will update all when I have answers.
Thanks
