Dear District Leaders,
In his remarks in his State of the State Address, Governor DeWine announced the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce is developing a new Statewide Attendance Dashboard designed to provide real-time, actionable attendance data. This tool is intended help everyone keep a pulse on how chronic absence is trending throughout the year, making it easier to identify patterns early and take steps to improve attendance.
Dashboard Features
The dashboard will be publicly accessible and will not include student-level data. It will allow users to:
* Display chronic absence rates by general or specific groupings, including county, district, building, and grade level.
* View attendance weekly, quarterly, monthly, or for the full school year and across the same categories on the State Report Card: Satisfactory, At Risk, Moderate, and Severe
* Export general data regarding absenteeism
Chronic absence calculations will be based on the amount of time a student could have been in school, rather than the entire school year, so it can function as an early warning system.
Data will be updated weekly. Districts and community schools will be able to adjust their data retrospectively for up to two weeks, helping to improve accuracy over time.
DEW has asked MVECA to assist in automating the weekly data processing for our members. If any school district would like to opt-out of the automatic transmission of anonymized attendance data they must do so by signing and returning the attached form by Friday March 27, 2026. If you wish for your district's data to be transmitted to DEW for the attendance dashboard, no action is required.
Some important items to note regarding the attendance dashboard:
* Student data for the calculation only includes those flagged for EMIS reporting.
* This does not replace attendance reported on the district report card.
* Attendance will be pulled weekly for the current week as well as two weeks prior to capture any attendance corrections or updates.
If you have any questions about the dashboard, please contact DEW at attendance at education.ohio.gov<mailto:attendance at education.ohio.gov>. If you have questions about the data for your school, please contact Thor Sage (sage at mveca.org).
Sincerely,
Thor
