[Mail_treas] Classified Pay on Calamity Days

This question is for those district's who have classified employees under
the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE). This question has
become a point of contention in our past negotiations.

Assume a scenario where school is called off or closed due to a water leak
in the building resulting in water being turned off to the kitchens and the
restrooms. All central office staff, teachers, secretaries, bus drivers
and a select few of the custodial staff are not required to come in.
However, a couple of the custodians in the building are asked to come in
and work on that day to assist with the clean up efforts.

My question is this, per your union agreement, how are those custodians who
were called in to work, to be paid for that "calamity" day for the hours
they worked?

   - Do they get an additional 1/2 pay on top of their straight pay? (1 1/2
   x regular hourly rate)
   - Do they get another day of straight pay on top of their regular
contract day straight pay? (2 x regular hourly rate)
   - Or do they get 1 1/2 pay on top of their straight pay? (2 1/2 x
   regular hourly rate)

The Union stance is that if those employees who worked, had not been asked
to work, they could have stayed at home just like the other staff and
gotten their regular rate of pay for the day. So how is it fair that they
have to come in and actually work for say and additional 1/2 hourly rate of
pay.

We just want to be both fair and consistent.

Thanks,
