Good morning!
Last school year, MVECA provided an opportunity for districts to opt out of the statewide attendance dashboard, and many did. We felt obligated to provide our members with the opt out option because the data that was being used for the dashboard is not ours; it is yours. We are merely the custodians of the critical data you collect. DEW has now chosen to populate the attendance dashboard with EMIS data that it already holds, as opposed to SIS data held by ITCs. MVECA will no longer be submitting data on your behalf and districts will no longer have the opportunity to opt out of the dashboard. Please contact us directly if you have any questions about this. See the forwarded message below.
Thank you,
Thor

[Ohio Department of Education and Workforce - Email bulletin]
Dear Superintendents,
The urgency to reduce chronic absence has never been greater. I appreciate the work you’re already doing to strengthen family outreach, reinforce intervention efforts, and remove barriers that keep students from attending school.
Chronic absenteeism isn't just a school issue — it's also a community issue, and it's going to take a community response. This dashboard gives us a way to see the challenge clearly and act faster to help make sure students are in school. Giving the community access to actionable, real-time data through the Ohio Attendance Dashboard<https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Flinks-1.govdelivery.com%2FCL0%2Fhttps:%252F%252Fattendance.ohio.gov%252F%2F1%2F0100019ff11d4ff4-0add76fb-0ffe-44cc-b143-0fe44fbada6d-000000%2F91MELEldNb0uMk4VQhTKbYib3Jzs1WJAL66_TAhl8xs=452/1/0100019ff237d40a-c3bb3404-0f42-4b96-8c6a-f21e1f8c0c08-000000/waM1gqwFRgX0wztCiHyc15cym4yQwYpEtf5eqpKYKOM=452> is essential to addressing this issue and supporting districts in improving student attendance statewide.
What’s changing and why it matters
We heard your feedback about the pilot Attendance Dashboard — especially concerns about data not aligning with local records and the added administrative burden placed on you and your team. Your input directly shaped the essential improvements now in place.
The Department will now populate the Attendance Dashboard using district EMIS data. This change will:
* Improve accuracy and consistency statewide.
* Eliminate extra work for schools and districts.
* Align the dashboard with data processes schools and districts already have in place.
Improved accuracy and no extra steps for districts
When Ohio launched the pilot dashboard, participation was optional to avoid adding work for districts. Now, all districts are automatically included, improving accuracy without extra steps. Because most districts already submit EMIS data frequently, using EMIS streamlines reporting and strengthens confidence in the dashboard. EMIS also includes district-level data checks and a longer correction window — the level of rigor you expect in the Attendance Dashboard.
What to expect
During the week of Aug. 17, the dashboard will begin populating from EMIS submissions. This will vary based on district start dates. During the school year, if your district has not submitted EMIS data for a particular week, the dashboard simply shows no change that week. As the data populates, we ask that you encourage local partners to engage with and use the dashboard.
The Ohio Attendance Dashboard is a vehicle to spur action, create partnerships, and bring change. This dashboard is a tool for the entire community — for parents, educators, local leaders, and neighbors — to start a conversation and work together to help students show up, stay engaged, and succeed. Timely, trusted data keeps this work urgent, brings partners to the table, and ultimately helps schools improve attendance.
Thank you for your leadership and continued dedication to students and families.
