Days 1-5 no make-up
Days 6-7 Blizzard Bags
Days 8-9 no student make-up. Staff days added to beginning of following school year as required PD days.
Days 10 and beyond make-up by adding time to remaining days.

At Bath, we simply replaced all reference to “State Approved Calamity Days” with “Calamity Days per Board Policy” in the CBA. We wrote the issuance of five calamity days into policy. After that, we either make up the days as instructions days of staff professional development days depending upon what makes the most sense. We also use the State’s e-day (Blizzard bag) provision for three more days of instruction if necessary.

Sidney City Schools negotiated a clause in the CBA contract, effective 08/01/15-07/31/19 that ATTEMPTS to deal with this issue-

Our thought being after Calamity Day # 5 from a PR standpoint, teachers being paid to stay home is going to be an issue when district asked to support a school levy. I have attached our policy- not perfect but issue is addressed.

Subject: [WOCO Supt] Calamity Days and Negotiations

We are in the process of negotiating with our teachers. They have requested language that clarifies how we are handling calamity days going forward since the law has changed from days to hours and calamity days no longer are provided under the law. Our current certified language says they are paid to work 183 days. Our current practice is to have all staff members make up after 5 days whether we make them up with kids or not, like the old system, because that language was still in our Classified Agreement.

  * Has anyone negotiated with their employees since the change from Days to Hours and worked on Calamity Day or School Cancellation language?
  * Does anyone require teachers to report to work on cancellation days?
  * Does anyone allow staff members to make up lost work time, due to cancellations, through other avenues?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Superintendent
Greeneview Local Schools
